How to Receive International Payments as a Freelancer in Indonesia (2026)
Indonesia's freelance market is growing fast, particularly in software development, UI/UX design, and social media management. Bank Indonesia's BI-FAST payment system now enables near-instant IDR transfers from Wise and Payoneer to local banks. Understanding platform costs and tax obligations can save millions of rupiah annually.
Quick summary
Best platforms for Indonesian freelancers
On $1,000 received from a US client and converted to IDR (at approximately IDR 16,000/$1):
- Wise Business — IDR 15,928,000 (0.45% FX margin, free BI-FAST transfer to any Indonesian bank). Best for direct invoicing.
- Payoneer — IDR 15,680,000 (2% FX margin, 1% receiving fee on non-marketplace transfers). Better for Upwork/Fiverr (0% receiving fee from marketplace).
- PayPal — IDR 15,200,000 approximate (2.9% + $0.30 receiving fee, 3–4% FX margin). Avoid.
The annual difference between Wise and Payoneer (for direct invoicing) on $12,000 income is approximately IDR 3,000,000–4,000,000. That's a meaningful sum.
- Wise supports BCA, Mandiri, BRI, BNI, CIMB Niaga, Permata Bank, and other Indonesian banks via BI-FAST.
- Payoneer supports Bank BCA, Mandiri, BRI, BNI, and Danamon for local IDR transfer.
- GoPay and OVO: Payoneer supports withdrawal to some Indonesian e-wallets. Wise does not directly support GoPay/OVO — you receive to a bank account and transfer to e-wallet from there.
BI-FAST: Indonesia's instant payment system
Bank Indonesia launched BI-FAST in 2021 — it's the real-time payment rail that replaced the old LLG/RTGS for most retail transactions. It means Wise and Payoneer can deliver IDR to your bank account far faster than before:
- BI-FAST transactions arrive within seconds, 24/7, including weekends and holidays.
- Maximum transaction size: IDR 250 million per transaction. For larger amounts, your platform may split into multiple BI-FAST transactions.
- Transfer fee: BI-FAST charges IDR 2,500 per transaction (paid by Wise — typically included in their fee structure, not charged additionally).
- Bank coverage: all major Indonesian banks support BI-FAST. BCA, Mandiri, BRI, BNI, CIMB Niaga are all BI-FAST connected.
- Previously, international transfer recipients in Indonesia faced T+2 or T+3 delays via RTGS. BI-FAST has eliminated this lag for most transactions.
Bank Indonesia regulations for freelancers
Bank Indonesia (BI) regulates foreign exchange flows. The rules for individual freelancers receiving from international clients are manageable:
- Foreign exchange transactions above $25,000 per transaction require a Basic Underlying Document — typically your service invoice or contract. Keep all invoices.
- Bank Indonesia requires all money service businesses (including Wise and Payoneer) to be licensed. Both are licensed under BI regulations.
- There's no mandatory IDR conversion requirement for individuals — you can hold USD in Payoneer or Wise indefinitely.
- For large amounts (above $100,000 equivalent), consult a licensed FX bank (bank devisa) for the optimal conversion route.
Indonesian income tax for freelancers
Indonesia taxes worldwide income for resident individuals. Foreign freelance income is taxable regardless of where it was earned:
- Register as WPOP (Wajib Pajak Orang Pribadi — individual taxpayer) with the Directorate General of Taxes (DJP) at djponline.pajak.go.id. This gives you your NPWP (taxpayer number).
- Annual SPT (Surat Pemberitahuan Tahunan — annual tax return) due by March 31 of the following year. File online via djponline.pajak.go.id.
- Tax rates (2023 Tax Law No. 7): 5% on income up to IDR 60 million/year, 15% up to IDR 250 million, 25% up to IDR 500 million, 30% up to IDR 5 billion, 35% above.
- NPPN (Norma Penghitungan Penghasilan Neto) simplified expense norm: freelancers providing professional services can use a 50% expense norm — meaning 50% of gross income is deemed expenses automatically, and you only pay tax on the remaining 50%. This is a major simplification that many freelancers don't use but should.
- PPh 25 quarterly advance payments: required if your annual income tax exceeds IDR 100 million. Paid quarterly.
- Convert foreign income to IDR at Bank Indonesia's middle rate on the date of receipt for tax calculation purposes.
