SWIFT vs ACH vs SEPA: Which Payment Rail is Best for Freelancers?
SWIFT, ACH, and SEPA are not payment apps — they're the underlying rails that banks and fintech platforms use. Understanding the difference tells you why a SWIFT wire costs $35 while a SEPA transfer is free, and why Wise can skip SWIFT entirely.
Quick summary
SWIFT: the international wire standard
SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication) is a messaging network that banks use to communicate transfer instructions. It does NOT move money — it sends messages. The actual funds move through correspondent banking networks.
- Used for: international wire transfers between banks, typically $200+ amounts
- Speed: 1–5 business days
- Cost: $15–45 sender fee, plus $10–35 per correspondent bank, plus 0.5–3% FX margin at each bank
- Best for: large, infrequent transfers ($5,000+) where a fixed fee is acceptable
- Worst for: frequent small transfers — fees compound badly on $100-500 invoices
ACH: the US domestic standard
ACH (Automated Clearing House) is the US domestic payment network. It's cheap ($0.02–0.50 per transfer), reliable, and fast (same-day ACH is available). It's how US payroll, direct debits, and most US bank transfers work.
- Used for: US domestic bank transfers, US payroll
- Speed: 1–3 business days (same-day ACH available)
- Cost: effectively free for the receiver
- Relevance for international freelancers: Wise gives you an ACH-receivable US account. Your US client pays by ACH — zero SWIFT fee. Wise then converts USD to your currency at 0.45%.
SEPA: Europe's free transfer network
SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) covers 36 European countries and makes EUR bank transfers as fast and cheap as domestic transfers. SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT) typically arrives same day. SEPA Instant (SCT Inst) arrives in 10 seconds, 24/7.
- Used for: EUR transfers within SEPA zone (EU + UK, Switzerland, Norway, etc.)
- Speed: same-day (SCT) or 10 seconds (SCT Inst)
- Cost: zero (or negligible) — EU regulation caps bank fees on SEPA transfers
- Relevance for freelancers: if you have a European client, ask them to pay by SEPA to your Wise EUR IBAN. No fees at all on the sending side. Wise converts EUR to your currency at 0.45%.
Decision guide: which rail to request for each scenario
As a freelancer, you often have a choice of payment method. Here's which to request and why:
- US client, USD payment: Request ACH to Wise US account (routing + account number). Free for client, arrives next business day.
- EU client, EUR payment: Request SEPA to Wise EU IBAN. Free for client (within SEPA zone), arrives same day via SEPA Instant.
- UK client, GBP payment: Request Faster Payments to Wise UK sort code + account number. Free for client, arrives in seconds.
- Client can only do wire transfer (SWIFT): Provide Wise's SWIFT details. Note: SWIFT wires to Wise incur a small receiving fee ($4.14 for USD, varies by currency). Not ideal but functional.
- Client uses PayPal: Set up PayPal as fallback. Accept PayPal for clients who insist, but quote a slightly higher rate to cover the 3.5% PayPal fee.
