Wise vs Xoom (PayPal): Which Is Better in 2026?
Wise and Xoom (owned by PayPal since 2015) compete heavily on the US-outbound corridor. Wise's pitch is transparent mid-market pricing; Xoom's is PayPal integration plus dense cash-pickup networks in Latin America and Asia. For most people Wise wins on cost, but Xoom's PayPal integration matters for some senders.
TL;DR
- Cheapest for amounts above $500: Wise typically beats Xoom by 1-2%.
- Sending to a Mexican bank or cash pickup: Both work; Xoom's promo rates sometimes win on USD→MXN small amounts.
- Funding via PayPal balance: Xoom (it's the only one that supports it).
- Available in your country: Wise has wider geographic coverage as a sender.
- Sending to Philippines (GCash): Xoom has a strong direct-deposit corridor with promotional pricing.
Rates and fees
Xoom's pricing follows the rate-margin-plus-fee model. On USD→MXN they typically charge 0.5-1.5% rate margin plus $0-5 fee. On USD→INR margins run 0.7-1.5%. Wise consistently runs at 0.4-0.6% total cost for mid-sized transfers.
Xoom does run aggressive promos (often $0 fee on USD→MXN, USD→PHP). For small transfers (<$500) these promos can match or beat Wise.
The PayPal factor
Xoom's main differentiator is PayPal integration:
- Fund a Xoom transfer directly from your PayPal balance — useful if you have unspent PayPal funds.
- Single sign-on with your PayPal account.
- Recipient can sometimes be paid into a PayPal wallet (though usually they receive bank deposit or cash pickup).
If you don't have or use PayPal, this is irrelevant. If you do, it can be a meaningful convenience.
Country and corridor coverage
- Xoom strengths: USD→MXN (massive Mexican corridor), USD→PHP, USD→IND, USD→Brazil, USD→Colombia. Strongest in the Americas and Asia.
- Wise strengths: Broader country coverage (170+ destinations vs Xoom's ~160), particularly stronger in Europe, Africa, less-common Asian corridors.
- Xoom limitations: Outbound from outside the US is limited. Wise sends from 70+ countries.
Recommendations by use case
- Sending USD to Mexico or Philippines, < $500: Try Xoom's current promo first. Often beats Wise.
- Sending USD to anywhere, > $1,000: Wise. Lower percentage fee.
- You hold PayPal balance: Xoom (use the balance).
- Sending from outside the US: Wise. Xoom's outbound coverage is US-centric.
- Multi-currency holdings + occasional transfer: Wise. Xoom doesn't offer this.
The verdict
Wise wins for most users on cost. Xoom wins specifically if (a) you have PayPal balance to deplete, (b) you're sending small amounts to Mexico or Philippines and Xoom has an active promo, or (c) PayPal customer service / fraud protection appeals to you.
