Our recommendation for India
For Indian residents buying US stocks under LRS, Interactive Brokers is the lowest-cost option. Setup takes 1–2 days and the FX cost is ~15× lower than most alternatives. INDmoney is the best all-in-one option combining domestic Indian and US investing with GIFT City regulatory standing. Note: Zerodha and Groww are domestic-only brokers and do not offer US stock investing.
Frequently asked questions
What is the LRS limit for Indian investors buying US stocks?
$250,000 per financial year (April to March). This is the maximum an Indian resident can remit abroad for investment purposes under the RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme. For investment LRS, TCS of 20% is collected by your bank on amounts above ₹10 lakh per year (threshold raised from ₹7 lakh effective April 2025; TCS is refundable against income tax). Verify current rates with your bank or a CA before large remittances.
Can I buy US ETFs like VOO or QQQ from India?
IBKR offers US-listed ETFs including VOO, QQQ, SPY, and thousands more to Indian residents via LRS. Note that SEBI has banned Indian mutual funds from buying US ETFs — but individual investors can buy them directly under LRS through IBKR.
