Our verdict

Airwallex Borderless is the best card for businesses and freelancers managing multi-currency spending. Interbank rates on spending with no forex fee. Not ideal for personal travel ATM use due to the 1% fee, but excellent for card spending.

Full review

The Airwallex Borderless Card is a corporate and personal debit card linked to an Airwallex multi-currency account, designed for business travellers and remote workers who frequently deal in multiple currencies. Airwallex, founded in Melbourne in 2015, is one of the world's largest B2B fintech companies operating in cross-border payments, and the Borderless Card is primarily positioned as a business spending tool.

The FX rate model uses the Mastercard rate with zero additional markup from Airwallex for cardholders on eligible plans. This means spending in a foreign currency draws from the relevant currency wallet (if funded) at zero conversion cost, or converts from another held currency at the Mastercard rate with no additional Airwallex fee. For business travellers with multi-currency account balances, this is operationally clean.

The Airwallex multi-currency account (linked to the card) supports receiving income and holding balances in USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, SGD, and 20+ other currencies. Businesses invoicing clients in multiple currencies can receive into the matching currency wallet without conversion, then convert only when needed at Airwallex's competitive rate (typically 0.5-1% above mid-market for retail accounts, tighter for higher-volume business accounts).

The card is primarily for business use: expense categorisation, multi-user team accounts with spending limits, integration with accounting software, and virtual card issuance for online subscriptions are core features. For individual freelancers or solo business owners, the Airwallex ecosystem is available but has more features than a typical solo traveller needs.

Regulatory standing: Airwallex holds licences from ASIC in Australia, the FCA in the UK, FinCEN in the US, and MAS in Singapore, among others. Client funds are safeguarded under each jurisdiction's requirements.

For business travellers and freelancers with active multi-currency income streams who want to minimise FX costs on both receiving international payments and spending internationally, Airwallex's combined account-and-card product is worth evaluating as a business banking solution.
