ATM detail: No Capital One ATM fee at any ATM. Third-party ATM operators may charge their own fees (Capital One does not reimburse these).

Our verdict

Capital One 360 is a solid no-forex-fee option for Americans who want something simpler than opening a Schwab brokerage account. The key limitation: Capital One doesn't reimburse third-party ATM fees, so you may still pay the ATM operator's charge abroad. For unlimited truly free ATM use, Schwab is the better choice.

Full review

Capital One 360 Performance Savings and the Capital One 360 Checking debit card are US-based products that offer zero foreign transaction fees on all international spending. The checking account, which is paired with the 360 debit card, charges no monthly fee, no minimum balance, and no foreign transaction fee on card spending abroad.

The ATM policy is less generous than Schwab: Capital One 360 has its own ATM network (Capital One-branded ATMs) where withdrawals are free, but reimbursement for out-of-network international ATM fees is not standard across all account types (the Capital One Venture and other credit cards have more generous foreign ATM policies). For debit ATM withdrawals at non-Capital One ATMs internationally, fees may apply.

For US travellers focused on card spending rather than cash withdrawals — i.e., using the card to pay for hotels, restaurants, and shops where cards are accepted — Capital One 360's zero foreign transaction fee means paying the Visa/Mastercard network rate without any additional surcharge. This is similar to Schwab's foreign transaction policy but without the ATM fee reimbursement advantage.

Capital One's broader product suite (credit cards with travel rewards, particularly the Venture cards) is often more relevant for US frequent travellers than the 360 checking account. The Venture cards offer miles on all spending (including international), lounge access at higher tiers, and TSA PreCheck/Global Entry credit. For a US traveller comparing their card options for international use, the 360 checking card is a reasonable baseline but the Venture credit card is often the better-optimised travel product overall.

Eligible for US residents only. Capital One is one of the largest US banks, FDIC-insured.
