Our verdict

For Americans wanting the absolute best exchange rate and multi-currency flexibility, Wise is unbeatable. For unlimited free ATMs, pair it with Schwab. Many frequent US travellers carry both.

Full review

The Wise USD account card is specifically the Wise product optimised for US-dollar based users — American residents or US-dollar income earners who want to spend internationally from a USD base. The mechanics are the same as the standard Wise card: mid-market exchange rate, transparent conversion fee when currency changes, and the ability to hold multiple currency balances.

For US residents, the Wise card provides the mid-market rate on all non-USD international spending, which is consistently better than US bank cards (which typically charge 1-3% foreign transaction fees on top of a network rate). The card is issued on Visa and accepted globally. The Wise USD account provides a US routing number and account number for ACH and wire receipts — making it useful as a USD receiving account for freelancers or those receiving income in USD.

The ATM policy from a USD base: two free ATM withdrawals per month up to USD 250, then 2% above that. For US travellers who need moderate amounts of local cash, this allowance is adequate. For heavy cash users, pairing with a Schwab Investor Checking debit card (unlimited fee reimbursement) covers the gap.

The Wise USD card is particularly useful for US-based digital nomads and long-term travellers who need to hold and manage multiple currencies alongside USD. The ability to convert USD to EUR, GBP, THB, or any of 40+ currencies within the Wise app at the mid-market rate, then spend from those currency balances without any transaction-level conversion fee, creates significant flexibility for multi-country travel budgeting.
