Our verdict
Halifax Clarity is a long-standing favourite for UK travellers and still excellent for card spending. Zero forex fees and Mastercard rates. The important caveat: using it at ATMs incurs immediate interest — it's a spending card, not a cash card. Pair it with Starling or Chase UK for ATM withdrawals.

The Halifax Clarity Credit Card has held a position as one of the UK's best-value credit cards for international spending for over a decade. It charges zero foreign transaction fees on all overseas spending and applies the Mastercard exchange rate (approximately mid-market) — meaning UK cardholders pay roughly what an online currency conversion would cost without any additional FX surcharge. This is exceptional for a credit card: most UK credit cards charge 2.75–2.99% on top of the exchange rate for foreign transactions.
The fact that it is a credit card (not a debit card like Wise or Starling) matters for several reasons. Credit card spending on large international purchases (flights, hotels, package holidays) triggers Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act, which means joint liability with Halifax for purchases between £100 and £30,000 if the merchant fails to deliver or goes insolvent. This protection does not apply to debit card spending. For an international holiday or cruise, the Section 75 protection is meaningful consumer protection.
ATM withdrawals on the Halifax Clarity are charged at the standard Mastercard rate with no additional cash advance fee from Halifax — though interest begins accruing immediately from the date of withdrawal (unlike purchases, which have an interest-free period if the balance is paid in full). For cash use abroad, this means ATM withdrawals are feasible but carry interest cost unless paid off promptly. Most users treat the Clarity as a spending card and use a Starling debit card for ATM withdrawals.
The Halifax Clarity has no annual fee. Approved applicants get a fixed APR (variable by individual credit assessment) with a standard UK credit card structure. The credit limit depends on the applicant's creditworthiness.
For UK travellers who want credit card consumer protections on international purchases without paying foreign transaction fees, the Halifax Clarity remains one of the best and most consistent options available. It pairs well with a Wise or Starling debit card that handles ATM withdrawals more cheaply.
