Our verdict
Zing is HSBC's answer to Wise and Revolut — and it's a credible entry. Zero forex fees, 5 free ATM withdrawals, and the stability of HSBC behind it. It's newer than the competition and still building features, but already competitive for most travellers.
Full review
Zing is a travel money and international payment card launched by HSBC in 2024, built as a standalone app distinct from HSBC's main banking products. HSBC positioned Zing as a direct competitor to Wise and Revolut, targeting UK and EU residents who want competitive FX rates for travel spending and international transfers without the restrictions of traditional bank products.
The FX rate model charges a margin above mid-market (typically around 0.5-1.0%) rather than Wise's fee-plus-pure-mid-market approach. There are no monthly fees, no foreign transaction fees in the traditional sense, and no charges for standard spending abroad. The effective cost per transaction is the embedded rate margin.
International transfers from Zing are priced competitively for the corridors HSBC has prioritised, and the brand credibility that comes from HSBC's backing gives Zing a trust advantage over newer, less established fintechs for customers who are wary of fintech startups holding their money.
The HSBC infrastructure means Zing benefits from established compliance, safeguarding, and operational processes that newer fintechs have had to build from scratch. For a first-generation product, the reliability and security posture are strong.
Zing is still a relatively new product (2024 launch) and its feature set and coverage are still expanding. The app has received generally positive early reviews but has not yet accumulated the track record of a Wise or Revolut. For HSBC banking customers who want a complementary travel card from a trusted institution, Zing is worth evaluating. For pure rate optimisation, Wise remains the benchmark.
