German passport holders enter the US via ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) — not a visa but a pre-travel authorisation. Apply at esta.cbp.dhs.gov. Fee: $21. Valid 2 years or until passport expires. Approved instantly in most cases — apply before booking hotels. Allows 90-day stays per visit for tourism and business. Cannot work on ESTA. CBP officers at US entry have wide discretion — have hotel bookings and a clear itinerary.

ESTA for German passport holders: apply before you book anything else

ESTA is the US equivalent of Singapore's participation in the Visa Waiver Program. Singapore passports have participated since the program's inception. Apply at esta.cbp.dhs.gov — the only official US government site. Fee: $21. Typical approval: instant to 72 hours. Valid 2 years or until passport expiry. The ESTA asks about prior travel to Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Yemen — if you have visited any of these countries since 2011, you are not eligible for ESTA and must apply for a B-1/B-2 tourist visa at the US Embassy in Berlin or SIN consulate instead. ESTA is linked to your passport chip — if your passport expires you need a new ESTA even if the old one shows time remaining.

Lufthansa's US network from Frankfurt and Munich: the German traveller's advantage

Singapore carriers operates one of the world's most comprehensive transatlantic networks from its SIN hubs. From SIN: New York JFK, Newark EWR, Los Angeles LAX, San Francisco SFO, Chicago ORD, Miami MIA, Houston IAH, Dallas DFW, Boston BOS, Washington Dulles IAD, Denver DEN, Atlanta ATL, Seattle SEA, Philadelphia PHL — and more. From SIN: New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles, and key US hubs. This means Singapore travellers can fly direct to almost any US gateway without a European transfer. Economy return fares average €600–950 ($650–1,020 USD). Book 3-5 months ahead for best fares. Miles & More frequent flier miles accumulate on both Singapore carriers and its Star Alliance partners (United, Air Canada) — useful for US upgrades.

On-arrival tips

  • 1ESTA must be obtained before boarding — airlines check at Frankfurt/Munich check-in
  • 2US CBP can deny entry even with valid ESTA — have hotel reservations and a clear itinerary ready
  • 3Tipping is obligatory in the US — not cultural, it is expected as part of service wages
  • 4US mobile data: buy an Airalo USA eSIM in Germany (cheaper) or pick up a T-Mobile prepaid SIM at the airport
  • 5Uber/Lyft are essential — taxis are expensive and harder to find outside airports

Key takeaways

  • Singapore passport: ESTA ($21, esta.cbp.dhs.gov) — apply before booking hotels
  • Singapore carriers direct FRA/MUC to 15+ US cities — no European transfer needed
  • Schwab or Wise: zero forex EUR→USD — Sparkasse/Deutsche Bank charge 1.75%
  • Tipping is mandatory in the US: 18-20% at restaurants
  • Prior travel to Iran, Iraq, Syria etc. disqualifies ESTA — apply for B-1/B-2 visa instead
