About the UAE Dirham
The UAE Dirham was introduced in 1973, replacing the Qatar and Dubai Riyal and the Abu Dhabi Bahraini Dinar. Since November 1997, the AED has been pegged to the US Dollar at 3.6725, making it one of the most stable emerging-market currencies. The peg is maintained through the CBUAE's substantial dollar reserves backed by oil revenue.
Why AED matters for remittance
The UAE is the world's third-largest remittance-sending country after the US and Saudi Arabia, with outbound flows of over $43 billion annually. With over 3 million Indian, 1.5 million Pakistani, and 700,000 Bangladeshi workers, the AED→INR, AED→PKR and AED→BDT corridors are among the highest-volume globally.
