About the New Zealand Dollar
The New Zealand Dollar replaced the New Zealand pound in 1967 and was floated in 1985. Informally called the 'kiwi' after the Kiwi bird featured on the NZ$1 coin. NZD is the 10th most-traded currency despite New Zealand's small economy, partly because of the country's high relative interest rates.
Why NZD matters for remittance
New Zealand's diaspora-heavy population sends NZ$1.5–2 billion in remittances annually, primarily to the Philippines, India, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, and the UK. Pacific Island corridors are particularly important — the NZD→WST and NZD→TOP routes are lifelines for many island economies.
