About the Vietnamese Dong
The Vietnamese Dong was reintroduced in 1978 after reunification, replacing both North and South Vietnamese currencies. The SBV manages the dong under a crawling peg with a USD reference rate, allowing daily fluctuation within a narrow band. The currency has slowly depreciated against the USD in line with productivity differentials.
Why VND matters for remittance
Vietnam is a major remittance recipient — roughly $14 billion annually — driven by the large Vietnamese diaspora in the United States, Australia, Canada, France, and Germany. Remittances are an important lifeline for families and a significant source of FX for the country.
