About the Swiss Franc

The Swiss Franc has been Switzerland's official currency since 1850. It is widely viewed as the world's premier 'safe-haven' currency, appreciating during global stress events. The SNB maintained a EUR/CHF floor at 1.20 from 2011 to 2015; its sudden removal in January 2015 caused one of the largest single-day FX moves in modern history.

Why CHF matters for remittance

Switzerland's high-income workforce — roughly a quarter of which are foreign nationals — generates significant outbound remittances. Major destinations include Italy, Portugal, Germany, France, Spain, Turkey, the Balkans, and Sri Lanka, totalling over CHF 26 billion annually.

CHF remittance regulations

Money transmitters in Switzerland are supervised by FINMA and must be members of an SRO (self-regulatory organisation). Strict AML rules apply: any transaction above CHF 1,000 (cash) or CHF 15,000 (digital) requires customer identification. Switzerland is not in the EU, so SEPA does not apply, though most Swiss banks are SEPA-connected.

How to send Swiss Franc (CHF)

  1. Fund via Swiss bank transfer (SIC) or TWINT for the cheapest in-Switzerland funding step.

  2. Compare providers on recipient amount; PostFinance and Swiss banks have noticeably wider spreads than Wise or Revolut.

  3. Sri Lankan and Turkish corridors have many small providers — favour FINMA-listed names to avoid funds being held during AML review.

  4. Note that some Swiss employers offer free first-of-month international transfers as a perk — worth asking HR.
