About the Brazilian Real

The Brazilian Real was introduced in 1994 as part of the Plano Real, ending years of hyperinflation. The BCB targets inflation and intervenes occasionally in FX markets. The real is a major emerging-market currency, sensitive to commodity prices (especially soy and iron ore) and foreign capital flows.

Why BRL matters for remittance

Brazil receives roughly $4 billion in remittances annually, primarily from the United States, Japan (large Japanese-Brazilian community), Portugal, the UK, and Germany. Remittances are smaller relative to the size of Brazil's economy than for most Latin American countries — Brazil's diaspora is smaller relative to population.

BRL remittance regulations

The Pix domestic instant rail (launched 2020) has transformed Brazilian payments and is supported by most international providers.
