About the Nigerian Naira
The Nigerian Naira replaced the Nigerian pound in 1973. After decades of multiple-rate regimes and FX controls, the CBN unified the official and parallel rates in mid-2023, allowing the naira to float more freely. The currency depreciated sharply in the months that followed before stabilising.
Why NGN matters for remittance
Nigeria is Africa's largest remittance recipient and the seventh-largest globally, receiving roughly $20 billion annually. Major sending corridors are USA, UK, Italy, Canada, and South Africa. Remittances equal 4% of GDP and play a critical role in supporting household consumption.

🇳🇬 Send to NigeriaNGN remittance regulations
The CBN regulates inbound remittances. Since 2020, official policy is that remittances must be paid out in USD or transferred to domiciliary accounts (FX accounts) — not converted to NGN at bank counters. This was designed to encourage formal channel use; some providers still offer NGN payout via approved partners.
How to send Nigerian Naira (NGN)
Use a CBN-approved International Money Transfer Operator (IMTO): Wise, Remitly, WorldRemit, Sendwave, and Western Union all qualify.
Decide whether the recipient wants USD payout (to a domiciliary account) or NGN equivalent at the prevailing rate.
Bank deposit to Access, GTBank, UBA, First Bank, or Zenith is the most common delivery method.
Mobile money via OPay, PalmPay, or Kuda is increasingly supported and credits in minutes.
