About the Sri Lankan Rupee
The Sri Lankan Rupee replaced the Ceylon Rupee in 1972. After the 2022 sovereign default and IMF rescue, the CBSL transitioned from a rigid managed float to a flexible exchange rate regime, which has stabilised the LKR around 300 per USD after a peak of 360.
Why LKR matters for remittance
Sri Lanka receives roughly $6 billion in remittances annually — about 7% of GDP. Major sending countries are Italy, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Qatar. Remittances are critical to the country's foreign-exchange position post-default and have been actively incentivised by the CBSL.
